The Dog Spot Rescue, Rehabilitation and Re-Homing Center has received 13 Baby Pit Bull puppies which will enter into a intensive training program geared toward turning them into emotional support service dogs for returning Veterns with Post Stress or head injuries. We will be coordinating our efforts with BEST FRIENDS and HSUS who both have programs designed to show that pits, in the right hands, with the right training, can be worthy and wonderful human companion dogs. We also will be working with staff from the Veterns Hospital which can help us idenify the needs of Verterns. These pups were born to dogs who were rescued from a massive multistate dog fighting ring in Missouri and Illinois. 507 dogs were seized in raids following an 18 month federal invesigation. Over 150 puppies were born while in the care of the Humane Society. These pups had been headed to the fighting ring as either fighters or bait dogs before their moms were rescued. Now facing death from euthanasia, different rescue groups across the states are stepping up to give those dogs who have passed behavior tests and their offspring a chance for life and love.

We will be socializing them with dogs, people, cats, children, teaching basic obedience, and giving them a chance to prove that Pits can be a trusted and worthy companion dog who can give service in a positive way to man. Please watch for our updates! If you know someone who would be interested in one of these pups for a future service or support dog, please contact us. If interested in fostering or sponsoring a pup, please Call Ashley at 707-342-4042 or email us at: thedogspotrescue@aol.com .This is going to be a costly project. We are looking for local trainers willing to donate some training time on this worthy project. Lets give these babies a chance.

UPDATE!

Bill from TDS, King Ralph, a little senior Pom mascot dog from TDS, and Al from Animal Friends Rescue Project arrived from Missouri this morning with puppies in tow.

We are excited about their arrival.
Funny, most of these pups look like labs or lab mixes! Nothing like Ca. pits!

They come from overwhelmed, overcrowded shelters, owners in crisis, neglectful situations, or simply abandoned to fend for themselves. Our mission is to eliminate the need for euthanasia, as a means of controlling the overpopulation of dogs, by spaying and neutering and by offering a place for dogs to go where they may rest, recover

and be re-homed into a safe nurturing environment.

The Dog Spot Rescue and Rehabilitation Center will help the dogs that pass through our gates return into their communities as solid dog citizens through careful evaluation, basic training, nutrition and love.

There is a suggested tax-deductable donation for each of our dogs. All donations are used to defray the costs of the medical care we provide. This helps pay for the services rendered, which includes but is not limited to, spaying and neutering, shots, rabies certificate, and other basic needs. These donations give our rescue the ability to function. With your generous support, more dogs will be given a second chance.

The Dog Spot Rescue & Rehabilitation Center will strive to put dogs back into their communities as ambassadors, showing the true worth of the formerly unwanted. Where ever their talent ability and generosity of spirit will take them, The Dog Spot Rescue will give dogs the time they need to find their path. The dogs will have the time to find "HOME.” Locations in Woodland, Vacaville, San Jose Penryn.

A PLACE FOR SHORTY

THESE ARE THE DOGS TDS BRINGS INTO OUR PROGRAM, THE ONES OTHER RESCUES WON'T OR CAN'T TAKE. SHORTY IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF WHAT COMES INTO OUR CALIFORNIA SHELTERS TO DIE.

Shorty looked like any other Shih Tzu /Poodle mix that shelter staff sees way too often. Scared, defensive, ragged and matted into dredlocks, it was clear that even though he was young, if not reclaimed by an owner, he would not be adoptable.

While on the euthanasia list, Shorty was given one last chance at life and rescues were alerted that he was available. In the Monterey area, Shorty did not know he had an angel over his shoulder. A volunteer rescue/transport coordinator named DEBRA LONG had spotted Shorty and begain calling Rescues to find a place for him. Contacting us, she secured a spot here and a transport was arranged. But sadly there was a horrible secret Shorty was enduring under those mats. The day of transport it was discovered that Shorty had second and third degree burns running down his back and legs. It appears that battery acid was poured on him and he was left without any medical attention. It was oozing and smelling of decay and a closer inspection revealed maggots in the wounds. Debra called us and we assured her we would take him anyway. She arranged for immediate emergency Veterinarian treatment where Shorty was completely shaven down and his massive wounds were attended. After a weeks stay in the hospital, Shorty has arrived  on 10/15/09. He will need follow up care, medication to control infection and pain, and emotional support and therapy to recover. This will take time. These are the types of dogs TDS wishes to provide services.

But it takes money, time, and volunteers to make this happen. We will provide updates on Shorty's recovery. When he heals both his mind and his body, Shorty will begin his journey for his new home and he will be available for adoption.

Shorty arrived today and is full of concern and fear. He is in a wicker crate in the house and was given a bite of steak for dinner. He would only take it when laid down on his pillow. It will take time.

And now he has just that.

First Day- Met the ranch cats who most often stay as far away from dogs as possible. They gave their support and compassion to this little guy.

Shorty Is Given A New Name

For a dog who was burned and has risen through the ashes, Shorty has been renamed Pheonix by our volunteers. He has made amazing strides with us in only a few days, learning to love and trust the people here. Pheonix has gotten well enough to have his cone removed, most of his scabs have healed over, and he now joyfully spends his days playing out in the yard with the other dogs. In such a short time he has already become much more trusting, giving little kisses and following the volunteers around. He even barks at them when he is left behind. He is easily becoming a spoiled favorite here at The Dog Spot.

phoenix

Pheonix Barking

PHOENIX IS DOING SO WELL! NOW NEUTERED WITH A SHINY NEW RABIES TAG, HE IS GETTING READY FOR ADOPTION. HE HAS A SPRUNG IN HIS STEP, A HAPPY LITTLE ATTITUDE. HIS WOULDS ARE HEALING UP ALTHOUGH HIS SKIN IS STILL BRIGHT PINK. HE FOLLOWS US AROUND ALL DAY. HE LOVES TO BE PETTED AND HELD AND CUDDLED. THIS IS GOING TO BE A GREAT COMPANION DOG FOR SOMEONE SPECIAL.

AMAZING HOW FORGIVING HE IS!

Phoenix/Shorty has had a setback. Due to his weaken immune system, he has cuaght a cold and it has hit him hard. He feels terrible and spends his days curled in a ball on my bed. He is under medical care and is taking his medication, but oh it breaks our hearts to see him un well again. Paws crossed for a speedy recovery.

To Whom It May Concern,

Just about two months ago, my family and I decided that we wanted to start looking for a dog to add to our family. We are an experienced pet family, already having two cats and a bearded dragon, but we were new to dogs. We didn't want to purchase a puppy from a pet store or a breeder, because we felt that since this dog would be a pet, we wanted a rescue dog. We also had a caveat to our adoption, in that our daughter had been attacked by a dog when she was four, and we wanted to find a dog that had an available history of some sort.

In looking at rescue groups for adoptions, we had several criteria that we wanted to have met before we adopted from them. We wanted them to be rescuing dogs, we wanted to actually talk with them about our needs and what dog would be most suitable, and we wanted to be able to meet and carefully consider our choice.

We found that at The Dog Spot Rescue. When I contacted them about a dog we were interested in, they asked about us, and what we were looking for, what our concerns might be, and what our level of activity was. I met up with The Dog Spot and they had pre-selected several dogs that they believed would be a good match with our family and lifestyle. When I went there, I found the location, clean, tidy, and well managed. They were well versed in the personality, as they saw it, of each dog presented. I was very pleased that I could meet the handlers and the dogs, and have a bit of time to think it over.

When my family went to the Farmer's Market to pick up our new family member, I found them well organized, clean, nicely supplied, friendly and honest. They reminded us of what they could/would do, and what they couldn't.

My family and I couldn't be happier with the service that they provided to our family, the valuable service that they are providing to the abandoned and lost dogs of the community. They are saving lives.

Rich and Lisa Radoycis

Dear Kate,

We have all lost our hearts to Tobi, nee Harley. He and our golden retriever rode home in the car just beautifully together. Harley instantly bonded with my daughter, Bianca; he slept curled up under her chin all night. The cats are adjusting well also. Harley is just darling: loves to cuddle, understands and respects "no," does pretty well on the leash and, with the exception of making a few spots in the house just to be sure it was his, hasn't had any trouble with using the outdoors.

I am sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you in person! I told Bill that of all the animal rescue groups with whom I've had contact over the years, I am most impressed with The Dog Spot. You can rest assured that should I ever hear of anyone looking for a pet, I will not only recommend your organization to them, but drag them by force to Woodland, if necessary!

Gratefully,

Katherine Palmer-Collins

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to you regarding our experience with The Dog Spot Rescue. We became aware of The Dog Spot Rescue through the website petfinder.com. Our experience with other rescues from the site made us skeptical however The Dog Spot was different. They were very proactive and straight forward in their responses but what really impressed us was meeting them at an adoption event in Davis. The managed volunteer core kept the dogs well behaved and clean. Their knowledge of each dog amazed us based on both on the suzzess of their adoption process and the number of new dogs they were able to support. The fact that each member of our family chose a different dog to adopt speaks to their success in rehabilitating animals rescued from shelters. With our lack of a cohesive adoption decision our eldest daughter led us into assisting by fostering dogs for The Dog Spot until they were able to be adopted. Our first group was a mother and five two week old puppies. The Dog Spot supported us with food, medicine, training, and supervision to ensure the health and safety of the animals. By the time they were weaned and had their first shots all the puppies and their mother had been adopted. During our time of fostering we began assisting at the Saturday adoption events in Davis as well. We have witnessed The Dog Spot being proactive in disease prevention through vaccination, the use of hand sanitiser by staff, volunteers, and visitors, the immediate removal of fecal matter, and animal observation. Our experience has impressed our friends so much that two of them have since participated in successful and healthy adoptions from The Dog Spot. We are currently fostering two adult dogs: a little dog who was found abandoned in the hills of Monterey and is in need of a great deal of positive experiences before he will trust people again and a three legged loveable lab mix waiting to find the right home.

My wife and I are humbled by the didication, generosity, professionalism, and love given by The Dog Spot Rescue and its volunteers and are proud to give what support we can. Our efforts are saving dogs that would otherwise be put down. We are currently working to arrange an educational visit to The Dog Spot by a local Girl Scout troop. The Dog Spot Recue is not a "for profit puppy mill" but a rescue operation dedicated to saving the lives of at risk dogs, rehabilitating them, and adopting them back into loving homes. Can we ever have too much of that in this world?

Sincerely,

Tim and Monica Sloper

Dear Kate,

I wanted to write you this letter expressing how grateful we are of you and everyone involved with The Dog Spot Rescue group. You and two other women came to our rescue when we had no where else to turn except euthanasia for my husband's deceased father's dog Annie. She was very aggressive and did not trust anyone. Your organization did not turn your back on her and gave her an opportunity at a new life. We will always be grateful for that! You brought her to your facility and fixed her up as far as combing and clipping all the matts in her coat. You got her updated on all her shots and showed her the attention she needed to recover from her loss.

Annie is now in a wonderful home because of you guys and we couldn't be happier with you and your services.

Thank you so much!

Jessica and Nate

 Dear Kate!

"Red Barron" is settling in nicely to his new home with me. We are discovering each other's idosyncracies and adapting easily. I love that he dives under the covers when I go to bed and sleeps by my feet all night. He is so cozy under there that it takes awhile in the morning to get up!

I am so grateful to "The Dog Spot" for all good work that you did with him. I can tell that he was loved and cared for as he didn't come to me with the trauma that other dogs I have adopted have shown when I got them home.At his first visit with my vet., she was happy he had been so well cared for and was up to date on his shots. I especially appreciate the responsible manner in which you check your adopters to assure they have good homes for your dogs. You do such a good job with information on your dogs ready for adoption, and your communication with prospective adopters are the best. Other organizations I contacted when I was looking for a dog, didn't even call or e-mail me a response. You were so prompt replying to my imquiry, I was more than willing to drive the distance to meet with you. I will certainly recommend you to any of my friends who may be looking for a dog! Your organization is terriffic-keep up the good work!

Regards, Denise

Dear Kate

I am the state public health veterinarian for CA and oversee the states rabies program etc. I have some oversight of all animal control agencies in Ca.

From a personal standpoint, I certainly am happy to support you and have had a very good experience working with you and your organization.

Regarding the kennel location, we only saw it from the outside. It appeared to be a safe and sheltered enviroment from what I could tell. The health of the dogs at the Davis park all seemed to be excellent. All the dogs I saw were bright and alert.
